Malay Ouk was born on December 27, 1933 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She was orphaned at a young age where she was left to take care of her 4 younger brothers. In her adult years, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and worked as a teacher and later as a professor. She married her husband, Bunthon Hing in 1960. She had a total of 9 children, but unfortunately the youngest 3 died along with their father during the Khmer Rouge Genocide of 1975-1979. Malay survived the war with her remaining 6 children who are alive today, and they all have immigrated to the U.S. Having lived a peaceful and safe life in MN for 3 decades, Malay enjoyed life with her loving sons, daughters, and 9 grandchildren. She went through so much in her life experiencing significant emotional and physical decline over the years; however, she managed to gather herself together after surviving to continue to take care of her family. Malay loved teaching her grandchildren math, playing bingo at adult day care with fellow elders, and always challenging her mind even at such an old age through solving crossword puzzles up until the day she passed.
Malay’s legacy of curiosity, kindness, and devotion to her family will forever be lived on in the hearts of all who knew her.
