Hugh I. Myers, Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Woodbury Care Center in Woodbury, MN. Beloved husband of 61 years to Sigrid Myers (nee Johnson), loving father to Leslie (Larry) Ladowski and Kristi (Elaine) Myers, and doting grandfather to Lauren (Jeffrey) Kraemer, Luke Ladowski and Logan (Marrissa) Ladowski, devoted son of late Hugh I. Myers, Sr. and Buena (nee Perkins) Myers, and caring brother of Mary Wheeler Myers. He was also a fond uncle and great-uncle, and a friend to many.
Hugh was born on July 9, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia. Soon after his father was enlisted in the Air Force during WWII, and the family was moved to Nebraska. After the war, the family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas, where Hugh later graduated from Shawnee Mission High School. He then attended Michigan State to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In August of 1960, Hugh married Sigrid, whom he had met in high school and dated during college. In 1962, Hugh was enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at White Sands Missile Range in Las Crucas, New Mexico, until 1965.
His engineering career took him from Kansas City to St. Joseph, MO, and then to Burlington Iowa, where he worked for J. I. Case Company. His next assignment was in Sao Paulo, Brasil, where he and the family lived for four years before returning to Racine, Wisconsin, and then to Burr Ridge, Illinois. He left Case/Tenneco to take a new job in the Twin Cities. He and Sigrid moved to their current home in Woodbury in 1992.
Hugh loved trains and all things mechanical. Growing up, he developed an extensive collection of model trains. He enjoyed travelling with his wife and family and took every opportunity to go on trips. He loved to take Sigrid back to visit her native country Germany. He enjoyed listening to classical music and “puttering” on his cars and other projects.
Once arriving in Woodbury, Hugh and Sigrid became devout members of the new congregation of the King of Kings Lutheran Church. Hugh and Sigrid were very active in the community for over 20 years. Hugh enjoyed being a part of the King of King’s Men’s Choir and the Retired Men’s Group.
Family time was very important to Hugh, and he and Sigrid took many trips to the Chicago area to visit their daughter and son-in-law and three grandchildren. They were for there for many holidays and birthdays, for taking in all the sports and other school activities. Hugh loved to play board games, like Monopoly and Risk, with the grandchildren. He would often bring his bike and go on long bike rides with the kids, and no visit was complete without a trip to Panera. Hugh and Sigrid also enjoyed spending time in California each winter where they would visit with Kristi and Elaine. There, Hugh would also take in the local railroad museums and exhibits and antique car shows.
Hugh will be remembered for his generous spirit and kind heart, for how he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and sharing his stories and thoughts on life, and for how proud he was of all of their accomplishments and for his eagerness to share these with others. He will also be remembered for his fondness of cookies, pastries, and Sigrid’s German rolladens and dumplings. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and many friends.
