1963-2018
Born in Broadview, Saskatchewan on September 3, 1963 to Edmond (Red) and Bernice Hoskins, Michael was the fifth of six children.
Mike did a lot of different things throughout his life including custom combining in the United States, and boot camp training for the Canadian Military which took him to the East Coast, but his roots were always in Saskatchewan. He returned to Moose Jaw and enrolled at SIAST to become an Automotive Mechanic. Later in life he found great purpose working for SARCAN in Yorkton before his disability would no longer allow. Michael enjoyed spending summers at the family cabin at Crooked Lake, playing with his nieces and nephews and visiting with cousins. By the time Mike was in his early teens his family began to notice that he was struggling with his balance and coordination. It would take over 30 years to finally figure out the cause. Dr. Pillay, a wonderful neurologist in Regina, finally diagnosed Michael with Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCAR8) a genetic disorder characterized by a slow progression of incoordination of gait leading to poor coordination of hands, speech and eye movement. For the last 15 years Michael lived in a small bachelor apartment in Yorkton. Many of the people who shared the complex where he lived, as well as the wonderful staff at the Painted Hand Casino became lifelong friends who were always willing to lend a hand when we couldn't be there. Our family will be forever grateful to these friends and colleagues.
On December 10, 2018 Michael made a very brave decision to exercise his right to die with dignity. Our family wishes to thank the team at MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) for providing this service and for doing it as well as you do. You provided Michael and our family great peace of mind throughout the process. He will be joined in Heaven by his sister Marlene (1971), his sister Linda (2010), and his dad Red (2012). They will be as happy to see him as we were sad to say goodbye. Michael leaves behind his mother Bernice, his brothers Morley (Angie), Larry (Jan), and sister Lisa (Bryon). His memory will be forever cherished by his good friend Brice Drinkwater, his nephews Chad, Corey (Janelle) Hoskins, Kyle (Brittany) and niece Chelsea (Jared). Michael also leaves behind four great-nieces and nephews: Sienna, Briar, Sloan and Lachlan, in addition to many aunts and cousins who have shared the joys, sorrows and everything in between.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held at the Broadview Community Hall in Broadview at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2018. Interment will occur at a later date to be decided by his family. Online condolences may be made at www.tubmanfh.com.
