Helen Kegel was born in 1933 in Regina, the youngest of ten children of John and Pauline Wenger. She attended Scott Collegiate Institute, and then Success Business College in Regina, where she learned shorthand, bookkeeping and typing. She worked for a while as a typist for a petroleum exploration company. Helen then went to the U.S., and trained to be a stewardess, graduating from McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis in 1956. She was then hired by Eastern Airlines and moved to Miami. She enjoyed being a stewardess, flying propeller airliners to destinations along the US east coast and the Bahamas.
In 1961, Helen married Stan Kegel, a pilot for Northwest Airlines, and moved to the Twin Cities, Minneapolis / St. Paul, and they had one son, Stanley, Jr. After a divorce, she continued to raise her son in Burnsville, Minnesota, where she lived for a total of about 20 years.
In the mid-80s, with Stanley Jr. in college, Helen moved back to her home town of Regina, where she started a small business, Rose Communications, marketing commercial janitorial services, specializing in construction clean-up. Helen continued to live in Regina through her retirement. She enjoyed occasional winter trips to Miami, revisiting her second home town. She stayed in Regina until circumstances had it that she needed care, first in Grenfell and then in Montmartre.
Helen enjoyed dance, poetry, country western music, and Latin music. Her favorite movies were musicals of the golden age.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Pauline, bothers, John Jr., Mike, Paul, Pete, Steve, and Bill, and sisters Olga Woolley and Kay Simpson. Helen is survived by her sister Mary Lucas of Grimsby, Ontario, son Stanley Jr. (with Christine) of Lakeville, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.
Helen will be missed for the love she had in her heart.
