Michael R. Amato Sr. , one of America's "Greatest Generation", went home to be with his Lord, departed family and friends, June 10, 2015. Born in Rome, NY, on January 8, 1922, the son of Ralph Amato and Lena Semo Amato. He attended Rome schools and enlisted in the US Marine Corp in September, 1942. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Campaign and saw action in Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and Guam. He was stationed in Japan during the early stages of occupation. In 1946, he married his high school sweetheart Dorothy Cavano until her death in 1985. In 1989, he married Evelyn Hazelgrove until her death in 2012. He is survived by 2 sisters, 4 sons and 1 daughter, 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He retired from Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY after 34 years of service. He was a kind and caring man who never asked for much and gave so much more. We will miss you, but will see you again. Keep watch, Marine, until we get there.
