Laura Mae Powell, 99, of Orlando Florida passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014, born June 4, 1914, in Calera, Alabama. She was the daughter of the late Tessie Miller and Katie Prince Miller. She has two siblings, the late Elizabeth Mattie Adams and the late James Augustine Miller.
Her husband Listren Powell preceded her in death. Her family includes include her daughter, Debra Powell Parramore (Ramon L.) of Casselberry, Florida, two grandchildren, Lynn Coleman and Dustin Parramore and three great grandchildren, Brea, Jared and Jadyn, five nieces, two nephews and several great nieces and great nephews.
Her favorite things to do were sewing and cooking.
She and her husband moved from West Virginia to Orlando in 1965. They were partners in ministry with Carter Tabernacle C.M.E Church and served with Pastor Milton H. Borens, Sr. She has served on various boards and auxillaries. Over the past forty-nine years, she served with numerous pastors at Carter Tabernacle C.M.E Church, such as Reverend L.L Montgomery, Reverend George Wilson, Reverend John W. Powell, Reverend Leonard Holt, Reverend Roderick Zak, Reverend Gary Collins and Reverend Dr. Vanessee J. Burns.
Mother Powell has always been involved in kingdom building at Carter Tabernacle. She was the first Ossie Davis Circle President. She was a Missionary and a Stewardess, serving faithfully for many years on Stewardess Board #1. She also was honored as Carter Tabernacle Woman of the Year in 1992. In early 2000, she traveled to Haiti with Dr. Martha Bell Stewart and Sister Mary Spikes on a mission trip. In her eyes, each day was a blessing. Mother Powell considered herself just another “Soldier on the battlefield for her Lord”.
