Jack passed away on September 14, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 95 and a half years young. Jack was a dedicated and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a wonderful friend to many. He was a Roman Catholic and longtime member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Winter Park, FL.
Jack was born on January 21, 1926 in North Hempstead, New York, he attended Dartmouth College and was a graduate of Rollins College, Winter Park, FL. Jack proudly served in the Navy and was stationed in Guam during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he continued to serve his country at the USN Special Devices Center in Port Washington, New York until he was transferred to Orlando, FL in 1965. Jack retired as a Program Analyst from the Naval Training Systems Center in 1986.
In addition to his employment, Jack was one of the founding members USN Special Devices Center Federal Credit Union (1949), name changed to Naval Training Devices Center Federal Credit Union (NTDCFCU) (1957) and today is now known as Fairwinds Credit Union (1995). He served on the Credit Committee for numerous years while the NTDCFCU was in existence in Orlando.
Jack earned his Private Pilot’s License wings on November 7, 1969, which he continued to enjoy until 1993. He was also a member of the Orlando Navy Flying Club and served in different Officer rolls during his participation.
Jack was an avid outdoorsman and always enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a proud member of National Wild Turkey Federation for over 35 years.
Jack is survived by his children, Maureen Bowman (Tom) of Fern Park, FL, Patrick Sammis of Orlando, FL, and Michael Sammis of Winter Park, FL. He was Gramps to “his Girls”, granddaughters Victoria Hill (Tyler), Siobhan Bowman (Christian Magno), Keeley Bowman, Kendall Sammis; and Stephine Sammis (Eric Towler); also, great-grandchildren, Tayden, Haylee and Hunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and James Sammis and his sister and brother-in-law Rosemary and Owen Smith.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Baldwin-Fairchild Goldenrod/Winter Park Funeral Home located at 7520 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, FL 32792.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10:00 am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 526 N. Park Ave., Winter Park, FL 32789.
