July 1, 1933 – August 22, 2024
Joan M. Velz, age 91 of Winter Park, Florida passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024. She was born Joan Montgomery in Monroe, North Carolina on July 1, 1933.
She graduated from Walter Bickett High School in Monroe, North Carolina in 1951. She later received an Associates Degree in Banking from the University of Florida.
Joan was married to George T. Velz on July 8, 1961. Initially Joan was a homemaker to George and their four children, Greg, Kristen, Karen and Kathy. Later she started as a switchboard operator at what was then Atlantic Bank. She was also the Christmas Club clerk at the bank. She worked her way up in the bank and through the merger with First Union Bank. She ended up retiring as a Senior Vice President and Branch Manager with First Union Bank.
As a young lady she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and later was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her personal passions were antiques, history and sewing.
Joan was preceded in death by her mother Christine Montgomery Postlewait and her father Howard Earl Montgomery. She is survived by her husband George and children Greg, Kristen, Karen and Kathy.
Joan was a peacemaker and a nurturer. She was very dedicated to her family and took pride in having raised four wonderful, happy and successful children. She also found pleasure in her grandchildren Blake, Ariel, Georgianna (Lucy), Lillie Grace and Lauren. She was proud of her accomplishments in the banking industry going from a switchboard operator and Christmas Club clerk to a Senior Vice President at her retirement. She always wanted her children and grandchildren to know that they could accomplish whatever they put their hearts and their minds to.
Joan loved people and went out of her way to make a connection with everyone that she met. Her favorite quote, particularly in her later years was, “I love you, I love you, I love you.” Joan was an early riser and the nurses at her home used to get her up and seat her in the lobby where she would greet each of the other residents as they would get up and come out of their rooms. We will all miss her cheerful personality and infectious greeting.
