James Turner Morton, Jr., age 92 of Longwood, Florida passed away Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 yrs. Lois Brenner Morton. He is survived by his daughter Sandra M. Hale Longwood, FL; son, James Christopher Morton, Islamorada, FL; three grandchildren; James Christopher Morton II, Charlotte, NC., Tyler C. Dimit, Longwood, FL, and Hayley J. Dimit, New York City, and a brother Charles Frederick Morton.
Born in Mobile, AL January 31, 1919, Mr. Morton was raised in Jacksonville, FL. In 1937 he began his 45 yr. career with New York Life Insurance Company but in 1941 enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater as a Signalman on the USS Mt. Olympus under Admiral Hulsey’s Third Amphibious Force. After being Honorably Discharged in 1945 he resumed his career with New York Life managing offices in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa and Orlando until his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed summers in Maggie Valley, NC, eventually moving to New Smyrna Beach in 1990. After the death of his first wife, Lois in 1992; he married Mary Ellen Smith who predeceased him in 2010. In 2008 he moved to Longwood.
His hobbies included golfing and gardening. He was past president of the Maitland Lions Club, a member of the Elk’s and an avid Florida Gator football fan. He continued to go to games well into his late 80’s. His gentle demeanor and warm smile endeared him to all.
