Elaine Garner Hammond, 95, went to be with the Lord, Nov, 17, 2016. Born in Lexington, AL, April 14, 1921 to Marion and Nancy Barnett Garner, she was the youngest of nine children. A graduate of what is now the University of North Alabama, she and husband S. Turner Hammond moved to Winter Park, FL in 1957 to continue their careers in education. Turner was a long time principal and administrator with Orange County Public Schools and Elaine a much loved 6th grade teacher at Lakemont Elem. and Aloma Elem. until her retirement. She loved her family, friends, and students, and will always be remembered for her warmth, bright smile, and quick wit. She is predeceased by her husband S. Turner Hammond and son David M. Hammond. She is survived by her granddaughter Kate Hammond Wilhite (Gordy), grandson, Mark L. Hammond (Emily), daughter-in-law Cheryl Hammond, 6 great-grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 28 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 220 W. Horatio Ave., Maitland, FL 32751. A fund in her memory has been established at Asbury, a place she loved for 40 years.
