My Grandmother was one of the most important people in my life.  She was my person.  When I think about how I want to be remembered in life, I want to be remembered as she will be.  She was the kindest, most loving person I have ever known.  To know her was to love her!  So many amazing memories were shared with her.  I would love to go over to her house and just hang out with her, we would go fishing, squirrel hunting, swimming, play games, and just be with her, and then she would top it off with cheese toast and ice cream!  I loved going and spending time with her and Grandad in the mountains.  It was like living in a real life fairly tale, the adventures we would have hiking the mountains hunting golf balls, apple trees, and gold flakes in the rocks.  She would invite me to play in her round robin league at the tennis courts and then go for high tea at 5 with a side of cookies.  I don't believe I will ever know a better person than my Grandmother, she was the definition of a good person!  Until we meet again, I love you Grandma, Andrew!

I could not have asked for a better Grandmother! She will forever be with my family and I. My time spent with her fishing and playing around the mountains of North Carolina are some of my fondest memories. I am a fishermen at heart and that is thanks to her and my father for helping me learn the ways.  From days spent catching bass and blue gill to days on the golf course or tennis court she could do it all! She will be loved and missed greatly and my only hope is to see her again.

My Grandmother was a truly wonderful person—kind, supportive, and endlessly loving. I can hardly remember a time when I ever got in trouble with her, even when I probably should have. She always made me feel cherished.
Some of my fondest memories are the summers I spent with her and my Grandfather. Whether it was blackberry picking, going to high tea, or going to Sliding Rock, she made every moment special. She had a deep love for swimming and staying active, always making time for exercise and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Her energy and enthusiasm were truly inspiring.
She also had an incredible sense of style, and I always loved dressing up and taking her to lunch. I feel incredibly blessed to have had so much time with her. Her warmth, grace, and love will be deeply missed, but the memories we shared will always be with me.

When I was a little girl, God sent me a guardian angel in the form of my step-mother Jeanette. She taught me how to do so many things and was a wonderful example to me my whole life. She taught me to love animals, gardening, flower arranging, and the art of bonsai. She gave me two wonderful younger brothers who I have always adored.  I was so excited when I was included in family trips or just got to come over and spend time with her in the loving home she had created. I will always be grateful for her love and kindness to me.

Aunt Jean was truly a special person. We will always have wonderful memories of visiting with her. When I was growing up, we would go over to her house to visit and swim with my grandmother, Doris. Many years later, I could take Abby and Emily to her house with my Mom, Joyce. My family will miss our visits with her. We always looked forward to seeing her. She would tell stories of the Young family. Aunt Jean will always be remembered for her love and kindness.

She was my mother-in-law for more than 50 years and  taught me many things. She loved exercise (golf, tennis, hiking, fishing and even bowling). She learned to play tennis in her 50’s. I remember practicing hitting the ball in her driveway. We spent the afternoon chasing balls she missed. I never thought she’d get the hang of it. Two years later, my daughters and I had the opportunity to play doubles with her. My eldest was on her team. I got the younger one, who was very good at sports. “Easy win” we thought. A few minutes later the game was over. Not only had she figured out how to hit, but she had a mean serve. We were shocked. It was so funny.

She taught me to garden, make wreaths, and decorate for the seasons. Unfortunately, I missed out on quilting. She was a great grandmother. I remember walking after dinner with her and my teenaged daughters. They asked if they could get a tattoo or a piercing. I was none to please when she gave the OK for the piercing but said no to the tattoo. I was beyond annoyed. Later she explained the piercing would heal but tattoos were permanent. The girls were ecstatic that she sided with them.

She was a beautiful woman. When I first met her, I looked at her son and said, “That’s your mother?!” She raised a wonderful son. He has always been kind and good to all of us. 

She will be missed.

 I’m going to miss you so much. Thank you for loving me even when I was most unlovable. I was so lucky to be your son. It was like being tethered to the Rock of Gibraltar. You were never controlling and allowed me to grow up on my own terms. 

Thanks for all you have done for me and my family. We have wonderful memories of Christmas breakfast at your house with my favorite dish squirrel and dumplings, not so favorite for your granddaughters. We loved the trips to Vero Beach and hiking in North Carolina. I know you were more than ready to join Dad, Grandmother, Papa, Aunt Doris, Joyce, your dog Rascal and the many friends you lost over the years. 

I will think of you every day.
