Smith, Janice A. “Jan”, 67 of Clermont passed away peacefully at the Mike Conley Hospice House on September 28, 2012 after a battle with multiple forms of cancer. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island on February 16, 1945 and by way of history, she was a direct descendent of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins who sailed from England to America on the Mayflower in 1620.
She received her BS and MST degrees from Bryant College, MBA from Ohio University and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University and was a College Professor at Bryant College (now Bryant University) for 32 years retiring in 2002 as Professor of Accounting Emeritus.
She moved from Rhode Island to the Kingsridge community in Clermont in 1997. She served as President of its Poker Tournament, Bingo, Pinochle and Dominoes Clubs and enjoyed playing Mah Jongg as well as dealer’s choice poker several times a week. She also was a regular participant in the Kingsridge Friday afternoon social hours. In her spare time, she enjoyed cruising with her family and friends.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Dexter A. Smith Sr. and Amelia “Toots” Smith as well as her brother, Stanley C. Smith Sr. She is survived by her brother, Dexter A. (Nancy) Smith Jr. of Clermont and Robert E. Smith of Shapleigh, Maine; 5 nieces and nephews, many cousins and a multitude of supportive friends.
Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 5 at 11:30 AM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Clermont, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in memory of Janice to the Mike Conley Hospice House, 2100 Oakley Seaver Blvd., Clermont, FL.
