Our mother, Dinie or Dinah (her Americanized name), went home to her Lord at the age of 94. Alberdinah was born in Drenthe, The Netherlands on November 1, 1927. She was a twin to her brother George and one of 10 children born to Lammje and Homer Vander Vecht. Orphaned by the age of 12, Dinie spent the next 12 years working in the homes of her relatives and other people, some whom she remembered treated her kindly. She relocated to Andijk, North Holland where she spent the years during WWII. She had many girlfriends, lost a beau in WWII and eventually married a persistent suitor named Cornelius Asma in 1951. They emigrated to Michigan, the USA in 1952 and there they had four children, all redheads much to her surprise. Eventually, they relocated to California in 1968 where they lived in the Bay Area for over 35 years. They moved to Florida to be closer to their children and grandchildren and they lived in their Oakland Pointe home for 10 years before they transitioned to Golden Pond Community in Winter Garden, FL which was across the street from their two sons’ homes.
Alberdinah loved gardening and won acclaim and awards for her green thumb. She would create beautiful flower gardens in the front of her homes. She was also a prolific tole painter and created many beautiful items that live on in her children and grandchildren’s homes. She kept a fastidious home but also had a knack for decorating and making things look lovely. She spent the last eight years as a resident of Golden Pond Community in Winter Garden, Florida and had wonderful caretakers there.
Alberdinah was predeceased by her husband Neil on February 15, 2014, and is survived by her children: Winnie (Don) Paauw; Bill (Mary Beth) Asma; Jerry Asma; and Dorothy (Bill) Keller. She has seven beloved grandchildren: Matthew (Jen) Paauw; Katie (David) Young; Betsy (Mike) Hickman; Emily (Matt) Keller-Logan; Nick (Ansley) Asma; Neil (Sarah) Asma and Dina Asma. She delighted in her great grandchildren: Benjamin, Joanna and Noelle Young, Gemma Hickman, Charles and Jacqueline Asma, and Camille Asma. She is the last surviving member of her brothers and sisters except for sister in law Lena Vander Vecht. Dinah took great comfort in Psalm 23, knowing that God promised to prepare a place for her and lead her safely through the valley of the shadow of death and bring her home to live with Him. She longed to be called home and expressed that desire many times over the last eight years. We rejoice with her now that is finally accomplished.
