William “Bill” Durham Mitchell, 79, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 18, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia, to Durham Hoyt and Mary Eunice Glass Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine “Gerrie” Harrelson Mitchell and his children, Laura Mitchell and William Mark and wife Wendy Mitchell. Bill leaves behind a sister, Marsha Mitchell Smith and husband, Garry. He was preceded in death by his sister Diane and brother-in-law Jim. He also enjoyed his three beloved grandchildren, Chloe, Phillip, and Graham. He is also survived by an extended family of cousins who had frequent family gatherings all their lives.
Bill was a kind man who was able to make anyone smile and loved a good laugh. He was a Southern gentleman and true friend to many. Being a multi-generational 1965 Wake Forest graduate, he supported and attended many football and basketball games with friends and family. If he wasn't attending the game, he was watching the Deacons on TV throughout his life.
Having worked for Wachovia and its later iterations for 26 years, Bill retired early at age 63. He and Gerrie traveled the US and abroad. Bill especially enjoyed visiting historic ship-building ports and museums. In his retirement, he took great pleasure building and repairing model ships for himself and local enthusiasts.
The service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, December 2, 2022 at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 3815 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 and officiated by Dr. David Hughes, former Minister of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.
