Mrs. Sarah Lou Weavil Welch, age 95, passed away in peace and comfort on November 21, 2023. She was surrounded with the love of Christ, and her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Mrs. Welch was a resident of Walkertown, NC until 5 years ago, when she moved to Toano, VA to live with her daughter and son-in-law. After a debilitating stroke in March 2020, she moved close by, to the Williamsburg Landing Nursing Facility.
Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William “Bill” Oscar Welch; her parents, Daniel Levi and Doris Woods Weavil; her brother, Harold Weavil; sisters, Margaret (Claude) Pruitt, and Frances (EJ) Long.
Sarah loved life and all the wonders that God gave her. She had a vivacious personality and loved unconditionally. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a caregiver for family and friends that were sick or in need of help. She loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own, as well as unrelated individuals that called her “Momma Sarah”.
Children were particularly close to her heart. She volunteered as a 4-H horse club leader, an Alateen meeting leader and sponsor, board member for the Eastern Alateen Round Up, and started the first Alateen meetings for juvenile detention centers in NC. During her retirement years, she taught afterschool reading classes.
Sarah loved animals, frequently taking in stray cats and dogs or mending wildlife. She was very involved with her daughter’s passion for horses. Sarah was never without a cat.
Sarah enjoyed having a career and traveling. Working for Piedmont Airlines gave her the opportunity for both. She retired from Piedmont Airlines in 1990 and became very active with the Piedmont Retiree’s Group. Sarah also served 16 years as a city council woman for the township of Walkertown, NC.
Sarah was a faithful member of Love’s United Methodist Church for over 70 years. Without a doubt, her favorite thing was singing in the choir. Sarah also served on many committees, food pantry, meals on wheels, the church board, and taught 3rd grade Sunday school. When she moved to Virginia, Sarah became a member of Mt Vernon United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Welch is survived by her daughter, Donna Welch Wilson and her husband David “Corky” of Toano, VA; a number of nieces and nephews, and those who called her “Momma Sarah”. Lest we not forget, her two cats, Sheba and Kitty Bell, who live with Donna and Corky.
A celebration of Sarah's life will be held on April 20, 2024 at 12pm at Vogler Funeral & Cremations immediately followed by a reception where the family will receive friends. Inurnment will follow the service and reception at Walkertown Gardens of Memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
