James Henry Newbury II, born to Henry Emmons and Marie Elizabeth (Cudd) Newbury in Warsaw, NC on March 7, 1927, was called home on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 10 AM. He fought a long battle with dementia and passed peacefully at his daughter’s home with family at his side.
He lived for a short while in Ware Shoals, SC and at 12 years of age moved to Brevard, NC. At 17, he joined the Navy, was stationed in Pearl Harbor and in 1946 survived the Hilo tsunami. After the war he earned a football scholarship and played half back for the University of South Carolina. He graduated with honors with a degree in journalism. During the summers of the late forties, he was a lifeguard in front of the Grand Stand in Myrtle Beach, SC.
In his first job out of college he joined WRNO radio station in Orangeburg, SC. In 1951, he joined Wachovia Bank & Trust Company and rose to Senior Vice President of Marketing. He was named one of the nine members of Wachovia’s Management Committee. In 1971, he started his own consulting firm and consulted with 20% of the top 300 banks in the U.S. He had a very successful career that allowed him to travel extensively, which he enjoyed immensely.
He was married on Valentine’s Day in 1953 to the love of his life, his constant companion and wife of 59 years. He was a good father, husband and PaPa. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was positive and kept his sense of humor to the end. He made friends for life and cherished each and every one.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Cox Newbury; sons, James H. Newbury, III (Claire) of Decatur GA and their child, Jackson; David Emmons Newbury (Mary) and their children, Ashton, Jake, Spencer, Sydney and Dalton; and daughter, Beth Newbury Davenport (Tony) and their children, Ryan and Morgan, all of Winston-Salem.
