Howard Franklin Steelman, 87, of Pfafftown passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, September 13, 2023, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on May 13, 1936 to the late William Thomas and Lucy Ledbetter Steelman of Yadkinville, NC, and he was one of thirteen children. When Howard was sixteen years old, he married Ann Reavis on April 4, 1953. Howard and his father-in-law, Zenas Reavis, built their first house in Yadkinville. In 1957, Howard and Ann moved to Winston-Salem after each acquired jobs at Hanes Hosiery. Howard later went to Westinghouse, where he retired after twenty-six years of service in the Tool and Die Department. In his spare time, he was a talented athlete who loved playing baseball, and he became an avid golfer in his later years. He enjoyed coaching youth baseball and basketball and youth and church softball.
Howard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ann Reavis Steelman, 3 children - Debbie (Bob) of Memphis, TN, Dean (Dana) and Dana (Allen) of Pfafftown, NC, 5 grandchildren – Corey (Kat) of Seattle, WA, Eric (Heather) and Chad (Danielle) of Rural Hall, NC, Makenzie of New York, NY and Madylan of Athens, GA, 3 great grandchildren – Lex, Elizabeth and Rebekah, and 3 granddogs Remy, Eloise and Daisy. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Royal (Ricky) of Courtney, NC and two brothers, Jimmy Steelman (Pattie) of Hamptonville, NC and Paul Steelman of Lone Hickory, NC. He loved his family, and they were his passion in life. He was a kind and giving husband, father and Papaw. He was the rock of the family. He will forever be missed, forever remembered and forever loved.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm and the funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Vogler Funeral Home, Forsyth Memorial Park on Yadkinville Road in Winston-Salem officiated by Rev. Dr Virgil G. Dwyer, Jr. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
