Ed was born in Thomasville, North Carolina to the late Clarence Franklin Mayhew, Jr and Ethel Elizabeth Everhart Mayhew Baker.
Ed proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee. He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He served during the Vietnam War in DaNang earning a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with Fleet Marine Force Combat Operations Insignia. After his honorable discharge, he continued to work for the Navy as a budget analyst with the Mid-Atlantic Naval division.
He admired the structure and dignity the military offered. Ed was a perfectionist and loved everything being done the correct way. His passion for dignity led him to go into the funeral industry after his retirement. Ed loved honoring people’s lives and making sure their farewells went off perfectly. He worked in funeral homes in Norfolk, Virginia, and High Point, Thomasville, Clemmons, and Winston Salem, North Carolina.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard John Mayhew and Scott Douglas Mayhew; stepsister, Alice M Baker; and stepbrother, Miles E Baker III. Ed leaves behind his brother, Franklin O’Neal Mayhew; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
Ed will be laid to rest with a graveside service at Salisbury National Cemetery on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 1pm. If attending the service, please arrive at 12:45pm, 501 Statesville Blvd, Salisbury, NC.
