Winston-Salem-Dorothy “Dot” Casey of Winston-Salem, NC passed away July 16, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She had been a resident of Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem since 2008.
Dot, born in January 5, 1926 in Wayne County, NC, was the daughter of Edgar Robert and Narcissa Grady Casey. She is predeceased by her parents, seven brothers, one sister and close friend and associate, Marge Crisp. Those left with many fond memories include her nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, Joyce Casey of Dudley, NC and Marge Casey of Mentor, OH; friends, many former students, colleagues, and athletes at Wake Forest University.
Dorothy attended Louisburg College and graduated from UNC-Greensboro (then Woman’s College) in 1948. After completing her master’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill she joined the Wake Forest University physical education faculty in 1949, becoming the fourth female faculty member. For 14 years (1974-1988) Dot served as Director of Women’s Athletics at Wake Forest University. As Director, she guided the Deacon Women’s program through Title IX, and from the physical education program into the highly competitive world of college competition for women. In addition to her career at Wake Forest, she also enjoyed 19 consecutive summers as head counselor at Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire, NC.
Dot Casey held several key committee positions in both the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and the NCAA. In 1993 she and Marge Crisp were the first two women elected to the Wake Forest University Hall of Fame. She was most recently inducted (June 2013) into the National Athletic Directors Hall of fame for her noteworthy contributions to intercollegiate athletics. She was a former member of Old Town Club, where the women’s championship trophy is named in her honor to commemorate her contributions to both Wake Forest University and Old Town Club. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church in Dudley and attended First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, July 19, 2013 in the Saal at Salemtowne Retirement Community with Chaplain Linda Browne officiating. The family will receive friends during a reception following the service. On Saturday, July 20, at 11 AM a committal service will be held at Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery, 714 Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, NC. 28333.
