Christene was born in Clanton, Alabama to Osmand Adam Price and Ellen Ruth Price Price. Her parents always told her and her sisters that they were thoroughbreds because Osmand and Ellen were 2nd cousins. Christene was the middle of 5 girls: Geraldine Price, Peggy Jean Price Turner, Christene Price Stephens, Shirley Price and Helen Price Edwards. Christene was a 16 (soon to be 17) war bride. Her husband, Norman G. Stephens Sr. was 21 and serving in the Korean War. He came home on a 3-day weekend furlough, and they married before he went back to his base at Fort Sill, OK. Their anniversary is 12/30/1954 and this year would mark 69 years since they would have been married.
Since Christene was such a young bride, she also became a young mother. Her first child, Robbie Gail Stephens Davis was born in 1956 when Christene was 18. By December 4, 1958, her second child, Norman G. (Chuck) Stephens, Jr. came along before her 20th birthday. The youngest child, David Scott Stephens joined the family 8 years after Chuck. From their earliest ages, Christene taught her children who Jesus was and the need for salvation. She was blessed in knowing that her children all came to trust Jesus as their Savior.
Through the years Christene accomplished many things. She quit high school to get married. Once Robbie was in high school, Christene went back to school and got her high school diploma. They “graduated” the same year in 1974. She then went on to Marrietta Cobb Community College to earn a degree in Secretarial Science. She sporadically worked outside of the home but never made a long-term career out of it. Her first love was homemaking and there is where she excelled. Her passions were her children, cooking, sewing, quilting and gardening. Once grandchildren and then great-grandchildren came along, being grandmother was her most cherished role. Her great-grandchildren especially brought great pleasure to both Norman and Christene. Whenever the great grands visited, Christene made sure Norman had gone to the store to purchase chocolate milk and doughnuts for the girls to have a tea party. Then the girls would perform songs and dance routines that they orchestrated on their own, much to the delight of their great grandparents! Christene thought her grandchildren and great-grandchildren could do no wrong!
Christene was preceded in death by her parents, Osmand and Ellen Price, her siblings, Geraldine Price, Peggy Turner, Shirley Price, and her sons, Chuck Stephens and David Stephens. She is survived by her sister, Helen Price Edwards and daughter, Robbie Gail Stephens Davis (Carl), daughter-in-law Tina Stephens, her 10 grandchildren: Ashley Davis Hayzlip (Tim), Matthew Davis (Stephanie), Brian Davis, Nathan Stephens (Ellie), Rebekah Stephens Hild (Blaine), Jason Stephens, Shellie Stephens Fields (Blaine), David Scott Stephens, Jr., Abbie Stephens, Ellie (Isaac Kidd) Stephens, and 9 great-grandchildren: Abbi Davis, Maddie Davis, Mackenzie Davis, Lucy Davis, Leah Stephens, Anna Beth Hild, Waylon Stephens, Nash Fields and soon to be born, Hudson Fields.
Service is at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 3rd at Vogler and Son’s Funeral Home located in the Forsyth Memorial Park and visitation will immediately follow. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park after the visitation at 1:00 pm.
