We are heartbroken to share the passing of our favourite good guy, Woody. Husband, father, grandfather extraordinaire, brother, uncle, cousin & friend to so many. In the blink of an eye, we lost an amazing man.
A celebration of life will be held August 12, 2023 at Glenwood Community Club 3 - 7pm.
Wayne, known as Woody by so many, loved life. It is with profound sadness but also immense gratitude that we celebrate Woody's well lived life.
On June 26, doing what he loved, playing hockey with his boys, Woody suffered a catastrophic cardiac arrest. He spent 5 days in the Acute Cardiac Care Unit at St. B where they fixed his heart. Heart was strong! He was then moved to the Medical Intensive Care Unit at HSC where he continued his fight, unfortunately he lost the battle. Woody passed away peacefully on July 9 at the age of 68 years young.
Throughout these days, family & friends were by his side. We shared stories and memories with Woody, we truly believe he heard all of us.
Woody was born to Sid & Dora in Winnipeg, where he lived his whole life. He spent his summers growing up at Nutimik Lake where his parents built their cabin in 1955. Deb and Woody purchased their own cabin in 1998 at Barrier Bay & in 2011, built our home where we've lived since 2013. The lake is everyone's happy place.
Woody had a few jobs through high school including onion ring boy at A&W. He also worked at Burns for a short time & then hired on to the CNR in 1974. Woody happily retired as a locomotive engineer after 36 years in 2010.
Woody loved his family, his life & he sure knew how to have fun. Hockey was huge for Woody. From the Jets, to his own multiple hockey teams. He loved to coach when his kids were younger & that love carried onto watching his Grandkids games & many activities. If the Grandkids had hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, taekwondo, cadets, baseball & gymnastics. You would find our #1 guy there cheering them on. He loved life at the lake, living it up boating, fishing, hunting, sledding, golfing, quadding with his friends in the 'hood', trapping & trapshooting. His most favourite, catering to the grandkids' menu requests & puttering around in his garage to tunes. Hanging out on the dock & of course seeing his many friends.
Woody meant the world to so many & touched many lives. He is survived by Deb, partner of 30 plus years, son Ryan (Carla), daughter Adria (Mike), son Sonny (Nancy), sisters Sharon & Sandra (Louis), brother & favourite hunting buddy Martin (Kathy), favourite nephew, his partner in crime Fred & many other cousins, nieces & nephews. And our grandkids. Woody was so proud of all of them & their many interests. Tyson, Tripp, Declan & Ava, Connor & Mason, Brendan, Dayven, Emmee, Aylee & Raydin. The most loving & dedicated Grandpa for sure. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, we all know how much he loved us.
Thanks to all the caregivers at St. B & HSC. Special thanks to Deb at the MICU & Salvador. So very caring & supportive helping us through this incredibly difficult time.
Cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral service. Woody always likes a party, so a party it is! Please join us August 12 to celebrate this good guy, our guy. The man who is our world and meant so much to everyone who knew him.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.thomsoninthepark.com for the Hazelwood family.
