October 4, 1925 - February 22, 2013.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother. Victoria grew up in a large Saskatchewan farm family during difficult times. The second youngest in the family, Vicky graduated from grade twelve in Allan, Saskatchewan and headed to the big city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she joined some of her older sisters and several of her aunts. It was in Winnipeg that Vicky met James (Jim) Carey. They married on May 21, 1955 and began a life together. They started their family in Edmonton, Alberta, moved to Dawson Creek, B.C, then to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and finally settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Vicky was predeceased by Jim, her devoted husband of forty-two years in 1997. Vicky was the loving mother to six children: Catherine (Paul), Jim (Laurie), Tom (Karen), Janet (Kim), John (Leslie), and Paul (Marnie). Vicky will always be remembered fondly by her fifteen grandchildren: Celene Carey, Abigail and Claire Chochinov; Tim, Sara, Patrick, and Mary Carey; Joel (Vanessa), Caitlin ( Nathan Wachal), and Carly Boyce; Breanna, Christopher, and Emily Carey; and Winnie and Alice Carey and great-grandson James Wachal. Victoria will also be missed by her sisters, Ida Whelan and Anna Mary Scarfe, sister-in-law, Therese Wright, and cousin Genevieve Kemp, all of whom she considered not only family but dearest friends. She will also be missed by her sister-in-laws Lorette and Elaine Bitz, many nieces and nephews, and good friends of many years Trudy Cooper and Emily Sleeman.
Victoria was a quiet, gentle woman of great faith and inner strength; she dealt with the difficulties in her life with determination and grace. Family was very important to Vicky and she was selflessly devoted to her husband and children. Being a grandmother and very recently a great-grandmother was a source of joy in her life. Vicky created a warm and loving home, so we are very grateful that with the help of an incredible team of women, Shirley Stewart, Anne Weins, Fran Everett, Ruth Hopfe and Chris Lussier, she was able to stay in her home -- the place she loved, the place where she was comfortable and felt safe, the place where the doors were always open to family and friends. She was truly an inspiration to her family.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 4 at 11 am, at St. Bernadette's Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
