Ulo was predeceased by his parents August and Adele Raabe, his brother Enno, his cousin Vilma, and his wife of 61 years Natalie. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Claudia and Irene (Bruce), family, and friends.
Ulo was born in Estonia and grew up on a farm near Tallinn. He was studying electrical engineering when his education was interrupted by World War II. Ulo was determined to receive his degree and finally did so in 1947 in Germany. He immigrated to Canada the following year, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He eventually settled in Brandon where he met his future wife, Natalie. They moved to Winnipeg when Ulo began his career at Manitoba Hydro where he remained for 35 years until retiring as Station Design Department Manager in 1985.
Ulo and Natalie married in 1950 and began their life together. A few years later they moved into the home where they would raise a family, share joys and sorrows, and grow old together.
Ulo had many interests and an inventive mind. He perfected and patented his electric sauna. He was able to do major and minor repairs to house, yard, boat, or car. His basement workshop was well-organized with many tools, manuals, and supplies. He enjoyed gardening and made wine from his own grapes and apples.
Summer vacations were spent driving with the family across Canada and USA. Later, there was boating on the Red River, Lake Winnipeg, and Lake of the Woods. Ulo enjoyed travelling and holidayed with Natalie in Hawaii and Mexico. He also travelled to Europe on business for Manitoba Hydro occasionally accompanied by Natalie.
Ulo was a kind, compassionate, generous person and will be greatly missed. He was proud of his Estonian and Viking heritage. His daughters value the many memories of their father.
A ceremony to celebrate his life will take place on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Thomson in the Park Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Ulo's memory to St Boniface Hospital Foundation, Action Marguerite Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
