We are very sad to announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather, Stewart McKay, on Friday, November 15, 2013, at the age of 90 years.
Dad was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Margaret, in 2006. Also predeceased by his sister Marjorie and his parents, Greg and Janet.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his children Jan and her husband Doug (Natalie and husband John and daughter Claire, Mitch and wife Kat) Rick and his wife Anita (Shane, Chase) Carl and his wife Val (Eric and wife Heather, Lindsey) and Marj and her husband Gary (Colin, Alison and husband Mark and son Sennen) and sisters in law Dorothy, Noreen, Ruth, Joyce, Muriel and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg and after graduating from Kelvin High School, joined Eaton’s. As many young men at that time, he volunteered for military service and joined the RCAF, serving from January 1943 to September 1945, overseas in Bomber Command. Like most men of the time, he spoke very little about this experience and while proud of his service to his country, never shared his stories. Following the war he returned to work with Eaton’s, where he remained until his retirement in 1988.
Dad was not one to wear his heart on his sleeve, yet it was always very clear he was proud of us, our families, and our children. During the past seven plus years since mom passed away, Dad surprised us all with his ability to flourish on his own, and we in turn, were very proud of him.
Our thanks to the staff at the Victoria General Hospital, four and five south, for all their care provided over these past two months.
Dad was a very quiet individual, and in keeping with his wishes, a private family service and interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, memorial donations may be made to any charity of their choice.
