With heavy hearts after a short battle with Cancer a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away with family by his side on September 6, 2024.
Steve grew up in Fort Rouge where he attended Churchill High School and met many of his close friends through sport. He excelled in football with the Bulldogs winning two Provincial championships and later in life with the team was inducted to the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame. Steve’s other passion as a young man was playing hockey where he played with the Winnipeg Monarchs and in 1970 was selected to be captain of the Manitoba Hockey Team, at the Canada Winter Games in Saskatoon, SK.
After marrying the love of his life Arlen in 1972, Steve joined the St James Police Department in 1973 where he began his long-distinguished career with what became the Winnipeg Police Service. During his career Steve rose to the rank of Staff Sargent working in many different departments within the service, spending the last several years of his career within the Behaviour Health Unit, where he took pride in supporting members and their families in time of need. Prior to his retirement in 2003, Steve lead a trauma team to NYC where they took time to debrief members of the NYPD after the 9-11 World Trade Disaster. This was one of the proudest moments of his career and he used this knowledge and experience post retirement, when he took time lecturing about Post Traumatic Stress.
Steve’s second love in life outside of his family and friends was golf. He was a member of Elmhurst Golf and Country Club for over 30 years, where he made wonderful lifelong friends. He represented the club for 17 years on its Sr. Putter team and won the Sr. Club Championship in 2015. Golf was a huge part of his life, watching golf, going on golf trips, talking about golf, and always the latest golf joke to make you laugh.
Steve easily made lifelong friends because of his calm, caring, kind and lighthearted demeanor. He had a joke for every occasion and often would add to the conversation where you would sit and wonder if he was telling a true story or if it was the beginning to a plot of a joke that you may have heard and forgotten over the years. He would get a twinkle in his eye and those that knew him well would sometimes know that he was going to make you all laugh.
Steves true passion and devotion was towards his family. He cherished his family, and it was always the most important thing in his life. From an early age Steve was devoted to his mother and his siblings, “MOMbo, ALbo, DOUGbo, CALbo”, and over the years always had a special unique bond that meant the world to him. This family adoration was accelerated when he met Arlen and he started his own family.
Steve loved to spend time with Arlen where they went on many adventures together. He made her laugh everyday. His 3 sons couldn’t have had a better father and role model, and he loved and cherished them with all of his heart. If he was taking one of the boys to an early morning practice, or giving a wise piece of advice they could use as a life lesson it was always done with a glow in his heart. Even when sick the most important thing to him was the assurance of the well being of his family.
Steve will be dearly missed by many. “He was one of the good ones”
