With deep sadness, the family of Saverio Masi announce his passing on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Grace Hospital after a brief illness.
Saverio leaves behind his loving wife Nina of 57 years, son Joe Masi and his wife Joyce Dalmyn, daughter Mary, son Rick and his wife Laura, and granddaughter Gabriella Mazzei. As well he is survived by two sisters in Vancouver, Angela Sacco and Filomena D’Amico, and a sister-in-law, Rosina Masi of Winnipeg, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Saverio was predeceased by his father Giuseppe Masi, his mother Maria, brothers Tommaso, Antonio, Francesco, Giuseppe and Angelo, and sisters-in-law Rosa, Anna, Maria, and brothes-in-law Angelo Sacco and Pietro D’Amico.
Saverio was born in Amato, Italy in 1924 and immigrated to Canada in 1950, settling in Winnipeg. In 1955 he married Nina and together they bought a house in Transcona and spent many happy years there. Saverio was employed with the Canadian National Railway as a trackman for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He was very proud of supporting his family.
Saverio enjoyed the simple things in life, family, gardening, making wine and enjoying the company of friends and relatives. He was often found under his grape vines in the backyard on a sunny day, watching his tomatoes and basil grow. After moving from Transcona, Saverio and Nina resided in a condominium in River Heights and for the past 2 years, Saverio was a resident of Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, where he enjoyed many happy times with the staff and residents. He was known for his beaming smile and gentle nature.
The family would like to thank the staff of Calvary Place for their loving care and compassion of Saverio over the past 2 years. The family would also like to thank all of their friends and relatives for their wonderful support and kindness during this difficult time.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Holy Rosary Parish Church; 510 River Avenue, with Father Sam Argenziano presiding. Friends may bring their condolences from 10 am to 11 am; mass will be Celebrated at 11 am.
