Rodolfo Castellanos passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, at Riverview Health Centre with family by his side.
Rodolfo was born in Guatemala in the town of San Martin, Jilotepeque on August 23, 1941 to Juan Bautista Castellanos and Romelia Corado. He was known as Chofo, Rudolph (the red nose reindeer), Dad, abuelo Rodolfo and "Valentino."
Rodolfo will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruth Cardona, and their son, José Castellanos. His stepdaughters, Luisa (Pedro Miranda and their children Diego, Paolo and Fernanda) and Adriana Alarcón. Rodolfo's sister, Mary Castillo (her adult kids and grandkids). His brother Juan Manuel Castellanos, his nieces and nephews, his oldest son Rodolfo Carlos, and two grandchildren residing in our native Guatemala.
Following his sister Mary and late husband Luis, Rodolfo was the first in our family to immigrate to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in January 1990. In Guatemala, he's remembered for his charismatic and party-like personality and professionally for his work as a credit manager at Grida Internacional. He was a true leader at Grida and kept friendships and cherished memories from those days until the end. Upon arriving in Canada, he leaned on his craftsmanship and studied carpentry at Dufferin School, electronics at South Winnipeg College, now MITT and video repair through distance education. His newly learned skills opened a new pathway for his life as a Canadian immigrant - becoming a maintenance worker at The Jewish Community Campus in 1999 until his retirement in 2019.
He was a true handyman and enjoyed buying the latest tools and helping repair and install anything we needed and wanted. He was also an avid sports fanatic and loved watching any programming on TV. Anyone who visits the house will remember a sports program, a movie, the news or a "novela" playing in the background, without forgetting his love for romantic music or "música del recuerdo," which he sang anytime he got a chance to at a family gathering, with his deep and beautiful voice.
The family is grateful to the medical team in charge of his treatment and care at CancerCare, Dr. Green, Dr. Bashir, Dr. Moffat, Dr. Coneys and Dr. Daeninck; Palliative Care, Rasha Pharmacy, and Riverview Health Centre. Each clerk, nurse, pharmacist, doctor and support staff held and guided us throughout this journey with care and compassion. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Thank you to the friends and family who stayed by our side, bringing food and transport and giving us love and support.
