Mary Koverski (nee Zahaiko) was born on March 8, 1927 and passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital on December 21, 2012 at the age of 84 years. Her last few years were spent at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg where she enjoyed making puzzles, tending her plants and playing games.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Peter, her daughter Susan Herbers, and her brothers Peter and Michael Zahaiko. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother Bill Zahaiko (Betty), sisters, Carrie Lashuk, Helen Tranq (Dan) and Lucy Kernot, her daughter Carol Cassels, grandchildren James, Geoffrey and Robert Cassels, and Shannon and Chad Herbers and her many nieces and nephews. Mary also had 5 great grandchildren, Sloan and Cameron Cassels and Ryley, Jaina and Addison Herbers.
Mary loved children and used to be a Brown Owl and Girl Guide leader for many years. Later in life she became an LPN and worked in the children’s ward at Health Sciences. When her grandchildren were born, she used to babysit on many occasions.
Before her stroke in 2004, she used to love taking care of her home and garden, chatting on the phone with her sister Carrie, travelling, taking pictures and keeping up the family albums.
A celebration of Mary’s life will held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. If friends and family so desire, a donation in memory of Mary may be made to a charity of their choice.
A private family interment will take place at a later date.
