We are broken hearted to announce that on February 3, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family, Mary Carlow began her next adventure, and passed after a long arduous battle with Leukemia.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband George, her parents Don and Lil, brothers Donald and Larry, parents in law, Leonard and Lily and brothers in law, Bill and Jimmy.
Mary leaves to mourn her son Michael (Erika), daughter Tracey (James) and the joys of her life her grandchildren, Colin (Kendra), Colton, Bryce, and Kristin. Also, her brother Glen (Terry), sisters in law, Lucy (Denis), Elaine, and Linda, as well as many special nieces and nephews. Mary was born in Ft. William Ontario, now Thunder Bay, prior to her family relocating to Winnipeg, where they eventually settled in Ft. Rouge. It was here where she was raised and attended Lord Roberts, and Churchill High schools. After graduation Mary trained at St. Boniface Hospital and became a Registered Nurse.
Mary loved nursing on the pediatric ward and was very proud of her time spent caring for these newborn miracles. She became the families “go to person” for her knowledge of bumps and bruises, scrapes and dents or any trivia for that matter, where she was the undisputed champion in our household. Mom kept in touch with her nursing friends, and looked forward to the many reunions with her nursing class after her retirement.
On a blind date, Mary, met the man of her dreams, George; love blossomed and they were married in 1964. They started their life in St Vital, and as the family grew, Mom decided to stay at home and raise her children. This is where she really excelled; Mom made our house a home, involving herself with all her kid’s activities. Mom volunteered for school field trips, fund raising, community club activities, extra curricular activities, and even found time to volunteer with the Salvation Army. This carried over to her grandchildren as she continued to follow them to tournaments, plays, and anything that they may be involved in. Mom traveled with them when the opportunity arose, and was happiest when they were near.
Mom absolutely adored having her family surrounding her, whether it be at home, her cabin at Ponemah, games in her apartment block, or simply D.O.T.P. or (“Drinks on the patio” as we refer to it) where we would catch up on the week’s events. Family was the center of her being. Mom was caring, thoughtful and fun. She maintained her spectacular sense of humor right up until the very end; finding amusement, laughing easily and infectiously with all of us.
Mom loved to travel, and spoke often about her visit to the UK, trips all over North America, and especially her adventures to Arizona. Mom’s hobbies were too numerous to mention, but a few included, bingo, needle point, ceramics, and her favorite, reading mystery novels. Mom also took great delight, getting us hooked on what she called “her shows”.
Our family would like to take a moment to thank her very special friends, Lucy, Terry, Pauline, Mae and Robbie. Ladies, Mom thought of you as sisters, your love and support over the years meant the world to her. Mom created many memories that those close to her will cherish forever.
Our family is especially appreciative, of the many doctors and nurses from CancerCare, palliative care and home care for the comfort and caring you provided during Moms final weeks. A very special thank you to Dr Hilderman for your exceptional care, your kindness and support over the years; we are eternally grateful.
As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Cancer Care, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choosing.
