Marie’s long life spanned more than a century. She was born on a farmstead in Saskatchewan, the second of five children. Her parents were recent immigrants from Eastern Europe, so the children learned English only when they went to their little country school. At age 13, Marie was sent to Winnipeg to live with a family as an au pair while completing high school. Teacher training led to jobs in southern Manitoba.
In 1939, Marie married a farmer in The Pas and the next years were spent raising three children while working on the farm and occasionally substituting in the school system. In later years, Marie also taught in Norway House and Pukatawagan. Retiring at age 65, Marie settled permanently in Winnipeg.
Marie is survived by daughters Jessie (Frank) Parker, Isabel (Ed) Tymofichuk, and son Marvin, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild as well as her sister Tallya in Arizona.
Funeral services will be held Friday November 28, 2014 at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard at 2:30 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of West Park Manor for their kind and compassionate care over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
