It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jane Thomson on November 22nd, 2022. Jane was born on February 10th, 1933 in Saskatoon, a city that she loved deeply. She lived on 7th Street and her days there were happy and joyous, so much so that despite leaving the city in 1945 she never stopped thinking of Saskatoon as her home.
Jane was a fiercely independent woman, elegant in appearance, and dignified in manner. She was keenly interested in politics and believed it was everyone’s civic duty to take an interest in public affairs. Appreciative of the arts, she attended many classical concerts and live theatre throughout the years. She was a voracious reader, a lover of a good historical novel or a multitude of titles relating to the woman she so admired, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
She had a special place in her heart for Westminster United Church where as a young woman with a beautiful voice sang in the choir, participated in the various church programs for young women, was married there (twice), attended the baptism of her son, and worshipped often with her parents, long time congregants.
Although inclined not to venture far from home Jane had many adventures abroad nonetheless. She travelled extensively exploring Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, Greece and Portugal, Great Britain, and the Caribbean. Many of these trips were done in style on the Queen Mary 2. Jane and son Robert shared many a summer road trip venturing to wonderful places from the Pacific Coast Highway of California to the rugged shores of Newfoundland and points in between.
Jane maintained several long term and cherished friendships throughout her lifetime including Ruth Brown, Raffelina Demery , and Ruthann Schadek all of Winnipeg and her Chicago friends Terry and Bill Moreton, and Phyllis Zornig. Other friends came and went enriching Jane’s life in ways large and small.
Jane leaves her son Robert (Garry) and stepson David (Cynthia) and their children Kate and Hugh, cousins Jean Klein, Bill Goodhand, and Iris Mahood, grand nieces Shelley Hollstein and Bonnie Guigon, and grand nephew Kelly Hollstein. She was predeceased by her former husband and Robert’s father, Frank Orr, and by her loving and devoted husband William Thomson, parents Fred and Mabel Musgrave, sisters Violet (Turner), Kathleen, and Joan, niece Sandra Hollstein (Melvin).
Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Jane’s wishes no public service will be held. Jane was a generous person who gave to many charities throughout her life. Therefore, in lieu of flowers consider donating to a charity that you hold close to your heart.
