Margaret Ann Taylor

It is with very deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Ann Taylor [nee Martin], on Saturday, March 18th, 2023.

Margaret was born on 21st December, 1933, in New Earswick, North Yorkshire, England. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of fifty-four years, John Taylor and her precious daughter Sara. She is survived by her daughters, Alison Taylor [Andrew] and Jenny McGinn [Greg], as well as her beloved grandchildren, Tracy [Jens], Steven [Lana], Kevin, Ryan [Vanessa], David [Kaitlin], Laura [Jason]. She was the proud great grandmother to Kai, Hannah, Nate, Alec, Jack, Adaline and Robin.

Margaret grew up in New Earswick, North Yorkshire, where she met the love of her life, John Taylor. She attended Millmont College, receiving her teaching diploma in 1954. Marrying John was the beginning of an exciting and adventurous life. In 1963 they left England for Nigeria, where she taught school in Ibadan and where they welcomed the birth of their third daughter, Sara. Along with her husband, she developed a passion for Nigerian art and culture which culminated in an extensive collection of African art. Margaret was not only an expert in the subject of Yoruba Art but was also passionate about English porcelain and silver. After four years in Nigeria, Kenya followed, where Margaret taught at Loretta Convent School in Nairobi.

In 1969, Margaret and her family moved to Winnipeg, becoming Canadian citizens in 1974. Tragically in 1980, John and Margaret lost their precious youngest daughter, Sara, the victim of a drunk driver.

In response to this devastating and life changing event, Margaret started a new organization called CAID (Citizens Against Drunk Driving), which later became MADD Canada. Margaret spent many years involved in the promotion of CAID which brought about changes to the impaired driving laws. She was instrumental in the creation of Safe Grad in Winnipeg and very proud to think that it would save young lives. For this valuable work and dedication, in 2002 Margaret received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.

Margaret was also an enthusiastic English country dancer, a great 5 pin bowler and a voracious reader. Later in life she had many years absolutely loving her time at the cottage with John, family and great friends. Usually with a gin and tonic in hand while watching the sunset.

Margaret’s ashes will be interred this summer, alongside those of John and Sara. A funeral will not be held as per her wishes.
