Peacefully on January 29, 2024, Madan Mohan Lal, affectionally known as Daddy ji, our beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at the age of 90, with family by his side.
Daddyji was born on October 1, 1933 in Binewal, Punjab, India. He was a son of Late Mr. Prem Pal and Late Mrs. Gurbachan devi and spent his life in various places like India, Bahrain, and Canada. Daddy ji came from a humble home and had to grow up fast due to losing his father at a tender age of 5 during the Second World War in Burma (presently Myanmar). He lived a tough, yet long and happy life and watched over three generations of family passing on his immense knowledge, wisdom, and experience.
Daddy ji had a long and happy married life with his spouse Leila Devi until losing her to cancer in 2004. At a young age of 18, he attained his first job as a teacher in Himachal Pradesh. To his last day he was referred by his friends and relatives as Master Ji. He joined the Punjab Electricity Board at 20 years of age and retired in 1990 from the position of an SDO (Electrical Engineer) at Punjab State Electricity Board, Punjab Kapurthala. Although he was a man of few means, he ensured his four children were highly educated, thus easing their path to success and the success of the next generations.
He first visited Canada in 2007, immigrated in 2009 as a permanent resident, and attained his Canadian citizenship in 2015. He quickly intertwined himself into the fabric of Canadian society by joining English classes for newcomers. There he regularly impressed the teachers with his superior ability to read, write, listen, and speak in English. With immense enthusiasm, Daddy ji volunteered at Victoria General Hospital for 10 years only to be stopped by COVID-19 when the volunteer program had to be shut down.
At home, he was an avid gardener. He transformed the backyard into the most fertile land that grew all kinds of vegetables. He was most fond of making planter boxes with a few hand tools and sowing flowers in them. His garden will dearly miss him. Although he spent many good years in Canada, his heart was still fond of his home. Always and forever a teacher, Master Ji’s donations helped build two large rooms for children at a school along with other good causes at his native village of Sajawal Pur, Nawanshahr, Punjab, India.
Daddyji will be immensely missed by his children Ravinder (Kusum), Naresh Bala (Harmesh), Kiran Bala (Arun), Sawtanter (Sujet) by his grandchildren Romina (Amit), Vibhu (Breanna), Rohit (Pooja), Mohit (Jyoti), Ankita (Shamsher), Shivangi (Ricky), Nitika (Nishant), Ira (Rahul), Jonty (Prabhleen), Akshit, and by his great grandchildren Sonica, Kaira, Saisha, Amaira, Rabaani, Juhi, Aryan, Aarvie, Alaiya, and Sayvah who adored, cherished and loved him dearly. Also in grief are his numerous relatives and friends all over Canada, India, and around the world.
