1919 – 2011
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie (Les) Pearce Smith, with his family by his side on March 10, 2011 at the age of 92 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elsie. He is survived by his children - Lyle (Yvonne), Glen (Karen), Margaret (Ram) and Wayne (Val), sister – Lena May, grandchildren – Richard, Shawna, Darryl, Tracy, Dave, Danielle, Randy, Ashley, Crystal and Latisha, great grandchildren – Kara, Jordan, Cole, Krysten, Micheal, Leah, Kennedy and Parker. He was predeceased by his parents, Havelock and May Smith and brothers, Dan, Harvey, Earl, Carl, Owen and Gerry.
Les grew up on a farm in Creelman, Saskatchewan. Worked in a mine at Red Lake and later worked in Thunder Bay. He trained in Regina for World War II. Then he met his wife, Elsie and married in 1940. Entered the Army for 5 years and served overseas. Farmed with his Dad in Creelman for 1 year and moved onto greener pastures to Elkhorn, Manitoba where he farmed for 26 years and raised their four children. In 1973 moved to Virden to drive a Canada Post mail truck and school bus. After retirement in 1986 they moved from Virden to Winnipeg. During his retirement he enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and friends, attending the weekly meat draws at The Royal Canadian Legion, Henderson Highway Branch No. 215, and making daily trips to Zellers on Henderson Highway to visit with coffee buddies. What we will miss most of all is Les’ quick wit and his Smith humor.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Concordia Hospital and Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care.
A celebration of Leslie’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion, Henderson Highway Branch #215, 3600 De Vries Avenue, East St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160 – 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
