Peacefully, with her children by her side, Janet passed away Monday, April 30, 2018. Janet will be lovingly remembered by her children, Renda (Arthur), Rose (Colin), Del (Lisa). Grandchildren, Laura, Sarah, Nicholas, Jesse, Austin, Jenna, Linnaea. Great-grandchildren, Jamere, Jaxon and Abigail as well as nieces and nephews.
Janet was predeceased by her son Harry, her husband Lorne and her brother Robert.
Janet was born in Selkirk, Manitoba and lived on the family homestead as well as in Winnipeg as the family moved from the farm to the city during wartime. Mom had many stories about growing up on the farm and attending the one room school house.
As a young adult she moved to Winnipeg and this is where she met her husband, Stan, and started a family. They moved to Alberta where their first son, Harry was born, returning to Winnipeg where Renda, Rose and Del were born.
Later she raised her four children on her own while working and going to school in the evenings. Mom worked hard to make sure her family was taken care of.
When Del was around 18 she met and married Lorne Nicholson. Mom retired at 60 and moved from Winnipeg to Kelwood, Manitoba where she became part of the Kelwood community participating in area events, Kelwood fair, Drop-in Centre, Ladies Auxillary, and of course the bowling.
After Lorne’s passing, she remained in Kelwood for several years before her kids urged her to move closer to them and she then moved to Tyndall, Manitoba. In 2016 she moved to Winnipeg and adjusted to apartment living, giving up her car as she could walk everywhere. She became a regular at the apartment’s social evening playing bingo, cards and visiting with the other tenants.
She was happy to find a nearby church and started attending North Kildonan United Church, who welcomed her into their church family.
Mom was creative, writing a novel or two in her 60’s and 70’s. She was an accomplished painter following the Bob Ross style of painting. She made many ceramics pieces which are still in the family. She took piano lessons in her 60’s. She had the most amazing handwriting which was a pleasure to read when she lived out of town and would write us all letters. She was an avid card player and taught us all how to play rummy, crib, hearts. She enjoyed travelling and the outdoors which she spent many hours in her garden chasing away the deer. No matter where she lived she was on a bowling team and won several “Bowlers of the Month”, High Scorer and many trophies.
She also enjoyed Knitting and sewing, making many patchwork quilts, scarves for the church as well as those less fortunate.
Mom was very generous and supported many charities and gave freely of her time to many causes.
Mom was very supportive to all her family, was always there to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on or her words of wisdom.
She will be missed.
We want to thank the staff at St. Boniface and Victoria Hospitals. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations/contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
A celebration of Janet’s life will take place at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Mark Whitehead officiating. Luncheon to follow.
Internment at a later date, when the flowers are blooming, the sky is blue and the birds are singing.
