It is with great sadness that the Eyre family announces the passing of Ivan Kenneth Eyre in Winnipeg on the morning of November 5, 2022. Ivan was born on April 15, 1935, in Tullymet, Saskatchewan, to the late Thomas and Kay Eyre; brother to the late Arnold Eyre; married to the late Brenda Eyre for 52 years. Ivan is survived by his brother Wayne; his sons Keven and Tyrone; daughters-in-law Christine and Joanne; grandchildren Gavan and Vivian, and nieces and nephews.
Ivan graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BFA in 1957 and was a Professor in the School of Fine Art from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. Ivan's career as an artist encompassed painting, drawing and sculptures. His work has been shown in public and private galleries across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Highlights include the first solo show in the new National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa 1988), a sculpture garden at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, Ontario (2011), and the Pavilion Gallery in Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg.
Ivan was a member of the Order of Canada (2015), the Order of Manitoba (2007), and The Royal Canadian Academy (1974). He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba (2008). The latter part of Ivan's career was nurtured by his friend, art dealer David Loch.
Ivan was a humble man despite his accomplishments. He enjoyed watching sports and classic movies.
