Gerhard (George) Martens

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerhard Martens on January 31, 2015 at age 99. Gerhard passed away at the River East Personal Care Home with family at his side.

Gerhard was born on March 29, 1915 in the Ukraine. From here Gerhard and his family fled to Paraguay in 1929 and in 1935 married Helena Rempel and together raised eight children. In 1958 they immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. The start up here in Canada was a huge challenge but he never gave up and throughout the hardships still led a full and long life.

Gerhard was predeceased by his wife Helena; one son and one daughter.

He is survived by one daughter Elisabeth (Bob); five sons Horst (Elfriede), Heinz, Peter (Trudy), Hugo (Linda), Jacob; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, 570 Sharron Bay.

The family would like to thank the staff at R.E.P.C.H. for their care and compassion.
