With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, at his home at Vista Park Care Home, at the age of 87 years. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret, in 2003.

Left to cherish his memory are his 3 sons, Clarke (Shirley), Colin (Julia), and Drew (Cindy), along with grandchildren Brett (Richelle), Erin (Chris), Kristyn, Garrett, Dane, Leah, Blayne, Brooke, and Nolan. Dad was very proud to have known his great-grandchildren, Leighton, and Zachary. He was also survived by his brother Herb (Sheila and nieces Sandra, and Louise) in North Vancouver and sister Dorie (Tom and nephew Nelson) in Moose Jaw.

Dad was born in Tenby, MB, in the same house his mother was born 20 years earlier. Dad was a life-long teacher with a career spanning over 41 years. He attended elementary school in Tenby, high school by correspondence and at Glenella, MB, and at United College (now the U of W). He continued his university at night and summer schools as well as Winnipeg Normal School.

His teaching career started at Durban, and Ochre River, MB, where he met and married Margaret in 1948. They moved to Winnipeg where they started a family in 1954. His last 20 years of teaching were spent at J. B. Mitchell Jr. High School in Winnipeg where he taught Math and Science, retiring in 1983 at the age of 60. During these years Mom and Dad were their boys biggest fans at various football, hockey, and baseball games. Dad’s phrases “cheaper by the dozen” and “put some mustard on the hotdog” became legendary among many officials and opposition alike who may have been off their game.

Upon his retirement Mom and Dad spent 17 winters as “snowbirds” in the South, mostly in Mesa, Arizona. They were both active in lawn bowling and Dad liked to golf with the seniors. They attended “happy hours” and dances with their many U.S. and Canadian friends. Mom and Dad were proud members of the St. Vital, now St. Mary’s Rd United Church for over 40 years.

Our Dad was our family’s anchor. Dad was a quiet, caring, and respectful gentlemen and father who didn’t say much until something had to be said. In his last few years he loved to have visitors. Even if not much was said, his door was always open. His inner strength and tenacity were never more obvious than in the last few months. No matter what, he never gave up on life, he never complained, he just kept going. We will always love you Dad.

Our family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at Vista Park Lodge. Their care and support for Dad the last 2 and half years will never be forgotten. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 11:00am at Green Acres Funeral Home. Interment in Green Acres Cemetery followed by lunch in the Green Acres Heritage Room.
