Edythe M. Fox

Our mother, Edythe Mae Fox, a great example of a strong, powerful woman, died on Saturday, October 21, 2023, two months short of her 101st birthday. She lived the last four years of her life at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. There she received excellent care and celebrated her 100th birthday last December.

She was born in Seattle, Washington, the second of three daughters to Hank Carlson and Esther Nelson. She was always proud of her Swedish heritage and was happy to finally visit Sweden in her retirement.

Edythe met her husband, David Fox, while attending Bible school in Three Hills, Alberta. Her marriage meant relocating to Canada, where she knew no one. She barely knew her new husband, but being the brave soul she was, she was ready for the challenge. After supporting David through his university studies at UBC, she became the proud mother of four children. They settled in Winnipeg in 1953. Edythe began employment with the Manitoba Government in the Department of Health initially as a part time measure to tide the family over Christmas. It turned into a successful career that lasted 35 years.

Mom was committed to giving us the best life she could. She ended up being a single parent with four kids back when that was a rare phenomenon. She always provided for her children, even going back to the office after hours to type up our term papers. She was very determined that all her kids graduated from university. No option! She did so much typing for us she should have got an honorary degree herself! She was generous and kind. She was also an inveterate shopper and a glamorous fashionista. Mom always had a great sense of humour and even towards the end of her life could surprise staff at the care home with her wit and sometimes risqué banter.

Edythe is survived and missed by her four children, Jill (Clyde), Bette-Jo (Mike), Cliff (Linda), and Rick (Pat), six grandchildren, Ben, Brenna, Zac, Jennifer, David, and Joshua ; and 13 great-grandchildren who are scattered across Canada and the US.

A celebration of Edythe’s life will take place on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Home at Broadway and Sherbrook.
