He was the son of Alfred Clare McInnes and Janet Donelda McInnes (nee Coulter), and younger brother to Donald (Julie) and Elaine (Chris).
He married Donna-Marie Ellen (nee Stephenson) and together they raised 5 children: Don (Cynthia), Sherri (Ken), Elaine (Richard), Karen (Bob), Diane (Bob). He was Grandfather to Andy (Taye), Ellie (Rob), Emma, and Leah and great-grandfather to Madden, Annie, Dane and Melody. He was an Uncle and friend to many.
Gordon was born in Winnipeg, and lived his entire life in the city. He graduated from Kelvin High School and later attended the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Bachelor of Science (1955) and his Degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine (1964). He met many friends throughout his dentistry program, many of whom became his life-long “dental buddies”.
Gord worked hard over his 43 years as a dentist, genuinely loving his busy practice and his wonderful staff. His patients appreciated his gentle care, kindness, and incredible sense of humour. When he eventually retired in 2007 at 73 years of age, many of his patients remarked that they felt they were losing a friend as well as an excellent dentist.
Gord was an avid sports lover in all respects, demonstrated not only by his participation in sports, but also by being a coach and a fan. His strength and talent as an athlete lent well to his participation in several sports. He was a member of Pine Ridge Golf Club for many decades, where he regularly enjoyed tee-times with his son Don, son-in-law Ken, and long-time friend Richard (Dick) Konzelman. He coached, and was an enthusiastic supporter of his children in their various sports. As a fan, he loved following the Winnipeg Jets, but especially loved his Blue Bombers, and rarely missed a game.
Gord grew up spending much of his summers going to Lake of the Woods, where he spent quality time with his family. He loved swimming, sailing, boating, the infamous family picnics, and of course, sitting in his favourite corner on the deck. Lake season was always kicked off by “men’s weekend” in the early spring when the men would convene and enjoy a weekend of food, drink and good company.
While Lake of the Woods was one of his favourite places, as a young adult, he found a love for travelling. He visited places such as Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica. Florida became a regular vacation spot with his young family, which resulted in two of his daughters choosing to make it their home.
To know Gordo was to love him. He was loved by so many and known for his kindness, generosity and incredible sense of humour. His daughters will always cherish the silly goofy Gordo, and the family dinners where his laughter brought him to tears. This summer he celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by his multigenerational family.
His family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Shaftesbury Park Residence for all their years of care and kindness. They would also like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Grace Hospital for their compassionate care during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcomed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Parkinson’s Canada.
A Celebration of his life will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 2:00 pm on December 13, 2024.
