Following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease, we lost our mom, grandma, great grandma, mother-in-law, cousin and friend on December 14. Fiercely independent, this final chapter was not an easy one for Dorothy, but she tackled it with grace and dignity.
Dorothy was a musician, pianist, conductor, teacher, leader and lifetime member of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association. There was very little she couldn’t handle at the piano, playing everything from musical theatre at Rainbow Stage and The Hollow Mug, to German lieder and opera arias for singers competing at the local and national level. She flew in small planes to entertain mining communities and even provided the dinner music for the Prince of Wales at Government House. She was a dedicated school teacher who took her River Heights Junior High School choir to perform at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. She was the choir director at St. Jean Brebeuf church where she formed lifelong friendships. She was a private piano teacher with a deep love of classical piano repertoire and heart-felt commitment to her students. Mostly Dorothy cherished her family. She could be strict at times, but she instilled in them values (and thank you card techniques) and even in these last days, she enjoyed some laughter and a good joke.
Left to mourn her passing are son Curt (Marie-France Giasson) and daughter Carla (Richard Stotts); grandchildren Sylvain, Daniel (Nicole), and Nicholas (Brooklyn); and her two great-grandchildren (who always brightened her day) Isla and Kai.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Herb and Margaret Greene; and husband Herb Lother.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at River Park Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please help us with the Dorothy Lother Scholarship fund through the Winnipeg Foundation and the MRMTA. It aims to honor a young and far too often over looked piano accompanist/ collaborator. This is the gift Dorothy would most love to share. Donations can be mailed to The Dorothy Lother Scholarship Fund, Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 - One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, R3B 0X3 or made online at www.wpgfdn.org/give.
