Dorothy Isabel Lister

Dorothy will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Donald Lister (Mona); her daughter Linda Reis (Roger Pelletier); her grandchildren Jennifer (John Craveiro), Jessica (Levi Sobering), Kevin, Amanda and Melissa; her great-granddaughter Kenda; and Amanda and Melissa`s dad Frank Reis. Also left to cherish Dorothy`s memory are her sister, Gladys Chutka (John Brown) of Maple Ridge, B.C.; her nieces Lori-Ann Misewich (Bruce), Bonnie-Lynn Hart (Steve), Shelley-May Chutka, and Irene Brown (Wayne); her nephews Jim Chutka (Nancy) and Brian Lister (Shawne); her great (and great-great) nieces and nephews; and her cousins.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Ronald Lister; father Walter Lamond; mother Isabella Lamond; step-mother Pearl Lamond; step-brother Ted Munro; brother-in-laws Jack Chutka, Hugh Lister and Robert Lister; sister-in-law Muriel Lister; cousin Frank Sinclair; great-nephew Taylor Hart; and many other relatives.

Dorothy grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. At the age of 22, she joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service during World War II. After the war, she worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. She met her husband Ronald at the dance hall in Clear Lake, and they were married on August 9, 1952. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and she left the CPR to be a stay-at-home mom to her son Donald and daughter Linda. In 1969, the family moved from Winnipeg’s west end to their house on Somerset Avenue in Fort Garry. Dorothy later returned to work, and held different positions in various organizations, such as the Winnipeg School Division, Macleods, and the Federal Government (Agriculture Canada) from which she retired.

Dorothy loved to travel, and during their 49 years of marriage, she and Ron enjoyed many trips together, including a trip to Scotland, their country of heritage. After Ron passed away in 2001, she enjoyed several cruises with her sister Gladys and summer vacations with her daughter Linda and granddaughters Amanda and Melissa. Dorothy also enjoyed friendly competition, whether it was a game of badminton, golf or croquet, or card games like bridge or crib. She was a member of the Canoe Club, the Wildewood Club, and the Reh-Fit Centre. She was a loving and devoted supporter of her grandchildren, and she regularly attended their sports and dance competitions and other events and activities.

Dorothy was a longtime member and former President of the Ex-WRENS Association (Chippawa Division). She belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Fort Garry Branch #90. She taught Sunday school when she belonged to Home Street United Church, and was a member of the U.C.W. when she belonged to Maryland United Church. She later joined Fort Garry United Church, and participated in Bible Study classes and annual church retreats. She had many wonderful friends, including her ‘Girls Club’, a group of special friends that regularly met for over 50 years, as well as Jean and Ramsay Falconer, June and Tom Masters, Sylvia and Stan Eagleton, and Barbara and Bill Baluk, to name just a few.

Dorothy had many special neighbours, and despite health issues, she continued to live in her house on Somerset Avenue until she was 91. By then, she was developing dementia, so it became necessary for her to move to Riverwood Square and later Extendicare Tuxedo Villa. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ebbeling-Treon, Home Care staff, and the staff at Riverwood Square and Extendicare Tuxedo Villa for their kindness and care of Dorothy in her later years.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Lister, Roger Pelletier, Steven Brown, Michael Pinnell, John Craveiro and Levi Sobering.
