It was with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, brother, uncle, and grandfather Daljit Singh Phangureh, on January 19, 2022.
He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his children Varinder (Loreta), Harinder, Jatinder (Baljeet), and Ravinder (Kulwinder). Babaji will forever live within the memories of his eight grandchildren, whom he played a remarkable role in raising: Harleen, Jaskaran, Jasleen, Amrit, Lukas, Jazmeen, Matas, and Manraj. He will also be remembered by his brother Gurdev Phangureh, sister Gurjit Kaur Kalkat, brother-in-law Pritam Singh Nijjar, sister-in-law Harbhajan Kaur Nijjar, Niranjan Kaur Nijjar, Satwant Kaur Nijjar, and his numerous nieces and nephews. Babaji was predeceased by his father Baba Ganda Singh Phangureh and mother Kartar Kaur. His wife of 65 years Surjit Kaur Phangureh, who passed away only 13 days before him. He was also predeceased by his brothers: Partap Singh Phangureh, Pakhar Singh Phangureh, his sister Surjit Kaur Bains and brothers-in-law: Darshan Singh Kalkat and Amar Singh Bains.
Daljit was born on March 23, 1935, Pandori Phangurian, Hoshiarpur Punjab to freedom fighter Baba Ganda Singh Phangureh of the Ghadarite Party and Sardarni Kartar Kaur Phangureh. Babaji was a Physical Education Teacher in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. He immigrated to Canada in 1972, to provide a better future for his family. Babaji worked extremely hard to lay a strong foundation for his family. After retirement, Babaji enjoyed his life with his wife and grandchildren. His biggest pride was his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Babaji made sure he was present in every large and small milestone in each of his family member’s life. He spent his free time giving to the community and doing seva within the Gurdwara.
His family will always be thankful for the sacrifices he made for us. Babaji’s love was always expressed with humour. He had a jolly demeanor and was always the centre of attention in any room. Regardless of any situation, Babaji never had a frown on his face. Babaji taught us about resilience, strength, determination, and honesty. Babaji’s presence will always be missed, but a small part of him lives within each of us. We hope to continue his legacy and the values that he instilled within us.
Babaji and Bibiji were inseparable and found tremendous happiness in seeing their family grow over the years. It is with an extreme shock that Babaji left this world only 13 days after his wife. But as a family, we are happy that his last days were filled with warmth, love, and bliss. All we can hope is that he has reunited with the love of his life of 65 years.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery. The funeral is closed for the family due to Covid-19 restrictions.
