It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Charles Sabo, at his summer home in Grand Marais MB on Saturday, August 17, 2013
Chuck was born on July 9, 1930, in Winnipeg Manitoba. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Trudy Sabo, his children; Jack (Karen), Randy (Irene), Charlene (Don,) and his grandchildren; Kelly, Andrew, Steven, Courtney, Craig and Lauren as well as long time and special friends Wally and Dorothy Jones and Les Lycan.
His school years included Hugh John McDonald and St. Paul's College, after school, Chuck worked for Molson Breweries from 1949 until 1970. From 1970 to 1984, Chuck and Trudy were the owner/operators of Transcona Bowling Lanes. Later Chuck managed a restaurant at Coronation Lanes until retirement.
Chuck and Trudy were married on December 7, 1951. They spent summers in Grand Marais, with friends and family from 1959 to the present. They made several trips to Australia to visit their son and family.
Chuck had always loved sports, which included hockey, lacrosse and tennis. He excelled at hockey and had a reputation as an old school hockey player, which earned him an opportunity to be invited to the Detroit Redwings camp in 1948, and latter had 2 trips to Russia, with the old-timers hockey association. He also excelled at lacrosse.
Chuck and his friend Wally were recognized as legends by the Grand Beach Association for originating horseshoe tournaments. Chuck also loved to play at the Grand Beach tennis courts.
Chuck lived everyday of his life to the fullest. He was a man who survived a quadruple heart bypass and a massive stroke 11 years ago, which left him with limited speech but still managed to communicate with everyone. Anyone who knew Chuck has a story to tell. He will be sadly missed.
A service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at North Kildonan United Church 174 Pentland Street.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the heart and stroke foundation.
