It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Barclay Williams (“Uncle Buck”), beloved brother and uncle, who departed this life peacefully in his sleep following a brief illness.
He leaves to mourn; his sisters Pat, Nancy, Judy and Sandy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by; his parents Eleanor and Alf Williams, sisters Kae and Dell, brothers Don and Brian, and dear friend Bobbi Carter.
He was born and raised in St. Boniface and St. Vital, as part of a large and loving family. As a young man, he was well loved by his friends, and enjoyed a good party. Starting in 1958, he served as a dedicated employee of Manitoba Telephone Service, travelling each day to his workplace in Selkirk, MB (and Steinbach) over the course of many years, and retiring at the end of 1992.
Although he never married, Barclay maintained countless close friendships (including lifelong friend Albert Funk), and connected with distant relatives, becoming part of the glue holding the expanding Williams clan together. He continued to reside in his childhood home throughout most of his life, caring for his elderly parents, taking his Mom on the car rides she enjoyed, and hosting regular family gatherings. His favorite gathering was St. Patrick’s Day when relatives would gather to celebrate the family’s Irish heritage through a festive potluck and an abundance of green decorations. Barclay made a memorable Irish stew. He also loved to man the barbecue at summer get-togethers and to mix up novel drinks for the grown-ups at Christmas celebrations. He was an avid fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Jets, holding season tickets with both for many years, and shared this love of hockey and football by taking several different family members to games with him. Above all, he was passionate in the things he stood for and a loving, supportive companion to family whenever they were sick or in need.
Special thanks to the staff of Golden Links Lodge, especially Yin Yin, Yordi and Maureen, who were especially supportive of family when the choice for comfort care needed to be made. Also, special thanks to his nephew Tim, who visited him regularly with his Timmie's coffee, and cared for both his home and him, especially over the last few years, and niece Tami, who stepped in to help Tim, when Barclay’s care became more complex.
As per his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Albright Church, 415 Maxwell King Drive, East St. Paul on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 1:00pm. Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
