James Arnoal Watkins passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Alvin Watkins and Annie Mae Hoopaugh Watkins, and his brother Donald. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Huff Watkins; daughters: Andrea Watkins and Holly Watkins Rutledge (Jacob); and step-grandson Tyler.
Arnoal graduated from Winder-Barrow High School in 1959. He was on the varsity basketball team all four years of high school and was known for his fadeaway jump shot. He graduated from DeKalb College in 1983 and received his HVAC certification. His wife notes that she wished his high school teachers could know that he made the Dean’s List every quarter and graduated with honors….they would be quite surprised because of his antics in high school. Arnoal was interested in vintage airplanes and once owned a Piper J-3 Cub. He took flying lessons at the Old Stone Mountain Airport and soloed after only 8 hours with a flight instructor. He went on to get his instrument and commercial pilot licenses. He could fix pretty much anything. He once bought a 1971 Airstream that had been wrecked and restored it to its original beauty - the family enjoyed many camping adventures in it for years. He may have looked intimidating because of his size and stature, but he was a kind, sweet, and patient soul who always put his family first and would help anyone who needed it. He was a true southern gentleman, the most genuine person you’d ever meet, and a patriot who loved his country.
