Sanford “Sandy” Carter, 82, of Wilmington, ended his long journey with Parkinson’s Disease on Friday, September 23, 2011 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCare Center. He was born October 11, 1928 in Marion Co., SC, the son of the late Henry H. and Jane Rouse Carter. Sandy went to school in Dillon, SC. He then joined the Army and served during WWII where he participated in the Occupation of Japan as a Green Beret. After his tour, he served as a Jump Master with the 11th Airborne 5th Special Forces Division known as the “Screamin’ Eagles, later named the 101st Airborne Division of the Army National Guard where he made 50 jumps. Following his Military career, he sold insurance for many years before establishing his own business in which he named Carter’s Carpet and Wall Cleaning, Inc. Mr. Carter was a member of Pine Valley Baptist Church, and he started Meals on Wheels and participated in the Boy Scouts during his time with the church. Sandy was also a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge, where he was a Mason and a Shriner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Carter, and sisters, Lee Carter White and Earleen Carter Edwards.
Sandy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lessie Costin Carter; daughter, Sheila (Rich) Walker of Atlanta, GA; sons, Jeffrey H. (Dawn) Carter of Wilmington, Dennis (Pat) Carter of Charlotte, and Randall (Cynthia) Carter of Matthews; three step-children, Linda Keith (Bob) Carroll, Hugh Keith, and Andy (Belinda) Keith, all of Wilmington; 9 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 4 step-great grandchildren; sister, Maxine (Dave) McLean of Wilmington; and a brother, Keith (Ginny) Carter of Buford, GA.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Oleander Chapel with Dr. Glenn Bohannon and Chuck Love officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park with Masonic Rites and Military Honors.
The family will receive friends Monday, September 26, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
