Rose Carey Melvin, age 84, of Rocky Point, NC, entered into eternal rest, peacefully surrounded by family and friends on September 18, 2022, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. Rose was born December 2, 1937, in Bronx, NY to the late Matthew and Anne Carey.
Rose was predeceased by her husband, Druward Melvin, daughter, Alice Melvin Copenhaver, two brothers; Johnny Carey, Ed Carey and two sisters; Elizabeth Eileen Johnson, Rita Strickland and son-in-law, Joe James.
She is survived by her brother, Robert "Bobby" Carey of Ingold, NC, devoted daughter, Wanda James and son James Edward Melvin and wife Gayle, her cherished grandchildren, Jerel James, Bobby James, Angela Varga, Michelle Johnston, Terry Copenhaver, James Melvin Jr., Drew Melvin, Brandon Britt and 13 great grandchildren. Other survivors include her nieces; Eileen Lewis and husband Darrell of Wade, Jackie Rich and husband Timmy of Asheboro, Mary Melvin of Garland, Margaret Cain of Garland and Patricia Johnson of Clinton.
Rose was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Rose was full of life. Competition and sportsmanship ran in her blood. She bowled prodigiously. You could find her at the Cardinal Lanes 2-3 times a week. It was a game of card playing, Canasta, that brought friends and family to the table every Friday or Saturday. Rose was a strategic and cunning scrabble player who could place a two-letter word resulting in an extra 20 points. It’s no wonder Wheel of Fortune was one of her favorite tv shows. Rose thrived on bargain hunting and selling at the flea market by Paul’s Place on Saturdays and Sundays. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the country and Europe with family and friends.
