Robert Evans Glasgow

Colonel (Ret.) Robert Evans Glasgow, 92, of Wilmington, NC, died of CMML at home surrounded by family on Saturday, May 28, 2022. He was born on Fishers Island, NY on Nov. 19, 1929, to Brigadier General Ralph Irvin Glasgow & Mrs. Mary C. Glasgow. After graduating from Western High, Washington, DC (Class President), he excelled at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY where he developed many long lasting friendships. (Track Team, Glee Club, and Cadet Company Commander). Upon graduation, June, 1953, he married Jeanne Marie Jacques, the daughter of Colonel Donald M. & Helen Marie Jacques.

During 27 years of active military duty, assignments included 2nd Armored Division-Germany, First Infantry Division & US Army Staff-Vietnam, 101st Airborne Division- Ft Campbell, KY, Infantry Center’s Training Brigade-Ft Benning, GA, and Military Advisory Group-Taejon Korea. Other notable assignments: Assistant Operations Officer-US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, Combat Development Command-Ft Belvoir, VA, & Army Recruiting Command-Ft Sheridan, IL. Bob commanded units from Platoon through Brigade, & served in staff positions from Battalion through the Office Secretary of the Army. In 1980 Bob retired from the Army.

In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Ranger Tab, Army Commendation Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Combat Missions Air Medals, three Legion of Merit Medals, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Vietnam Medal Second Class and various service medals and awards. During his service and after retirement, Bob volunteered his management & leadership skills to further the cause of developmentally disabled citizens. Under his leadership as a Board Member and President, the National Down Syndrome Congress was officially recognized for its achievements by US President J. Carter, Senator H. Humphrey and MG McGabe, Commanding General of the Army’s Medical Command. After retirement to FL, Bob worked in real estate and continued advocacy for developmentally disabled citizens.

Col. Glasgow was predeceased by his son, William, brother, Ralph, and beloved wife, Jeanne, who passed away in 2006 after battling cancer. Bob is survived by his son Robert Jr., daughter, Mary G. Fullerton and her three wonderful children Christopher, Allie (Alaimo), and Jeffrey, and great-grand daughter Ivy Alaimo. He will be remembered for his outstanding service to his country, his community, his support of all developmentally disabled citizens, but most of all for his love and devotion to family. Services will be held at St Andrew’s by the Sound, Wilmington June 11, 2022 at 2pm. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
