He was born in Wilmington, NC on November 5, 1947 to Phillip Hillburn & Patsy Cottle Bumby, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his eldest son Phillip Leroy Bumby, daughter Shayla, Desiree and Meridith.
Phillip Gary Bumby always went by his middle name, Gary. He loved to fish as often as his health would allow him to. In his younger days he liked to play even though he was not very good at it. But his biggest love was riding his motorcycle. That was his biggest passion as far as a past time goes.
Gary served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1971 as a high altitude pilot instructor. He always loved his days in the Air Force and was proud to be a veteran.
Gary's youngest daughter Casy passed away at the age of 28 and he really never got over her passing. He lost the love of his wife to cancer over 20 years ago and he spent his remaining days always remembering how much he loved and missed her. Gary's true love his later years was his dog Maggie, a beautiful white German Shepherd who is now living with his great and close friends William and Haley Phillips whom will be present to say their goodbyes.
Gary worked in the electrical construction industry for over 30 years and after his injury he had to learn to run projects as a project manager and put down his tools.
Gary was seriously injured in a construction accident over 30 years ago and was partially disabled since then. It made it challenging for him to find any kind of work and finally was able to get hired by Home Depot. Home Depot gave him a home and a new found purpose in life. We want to thank Home Depot for the never ending support and kindness that you showed him because to his last days he always was hoping he would recover from his illness and return to work.
